Rock-solid for horses!
Read our profile of Wendy Toomer-Harlow, a champion for heavy horses who has made a real difference on so many fronts, from her support for the Shire and enthusiasm for horse-drawn implements to her interest in driving two-wheeled carts and promoting riding. “Horses have, and always will be my first love,” says Wendy. “It you cut my leg off it would have the word ‘horse’ written there like a piece of rock!”
Fun in the forest
Join editor Diana Zeuner as she follows the eager heavy horse cross country trials participants through country lanes and woods in the New Forest Beer Run. Sponsored by Flacks Double Drop Brewery, Romsey, Hampshire, the Beer Run is a relay race carrying a barrel of beer from pub to pub through one of the most picturesque of British landscapes. Seven teams comprising two pairs and a single took part, with Shires, Percherons, Suffolks, Comtois and Cobs all included. Organiser Rowena McDermott said the participants had an excellent two days and were keen to run it again in the future.

Horse Power at Gressenhall
Workings are the mainstay of heavy horse enthusiasts up and down the country. Here’s a great one held in the eastern counties, at Gressenhall Farm & Workhouse, near Dereham, Norfolk in conjunction with the Eastern Counties Heavy Horse Association (ECHHA). It included the Eastern Counties annual ploughing match, a decorated harness class, logging and farriery demonstrations and a talk on heavies from ECHHA president David Bakewell.
Farm vehicles at the Great Dorset Steam Fair
The Great Dorset Steam Fair’s heavy horse event is one of the largest in the country, incorporating showing, demonstrations, a ploughing match – and a gathering of agricultural vehicles, introduced some years ago “to encourage them out of hiding”. David Viner focuses on some of the best. If you haven’t been to this event do go – it’s held each year at the end of August/beginning of September.
