Cornish Horse Power Group at Victor Barry's Treloan Coastal Heritage Farm

A second revival for the working horse? Leading the way in Cornwall

With new national training qualifications for heavy horse work underway one part of the UK has been quietly beavering away on new modules and ways of encouraging more people to work horses and ponies. The Cornish Horse Power Group has been focused on developing working horse training at Victor Barry’s Treloan Coastal Heritage Farm, running alongside real agricultural tasks year-round. Meanwhile Dr David Stokes, vice principal of Plumpton College, near Lewes, East Sussex, has been in talks with LANTRA, the sector skills council for the environmental and land-based sector, the British Driving Society and Cheryl Grover, one of the heavy horse world’s leading working horse practitioners. More news of the new qualifications will be available in the next issue.

200 Years of British Horse Ploughing Matches

Over 200 years of ploughing matches

Bob Powell begins a two-part series on the history of British Horse Ploughing Matches, reminding us that they are inextricably linked to the development and trials of ‘improved’ ploughs. He takes readers through the most important of these, the views of agricultural commentators of the time on the new matches, the introduction of prizes and some of the early champions. The second part will focus on the development of rules and matches after the Second World War.
